Will red wigglers eat cardboard?

Moist shredded cardboard is a perfectly edible addition to the worm bin.

In fact, at a ratio of 4:1, carbon based “browns” should be the bulk of your worms’ bedding.

There are likely many sources of cardboard in your home.

    • Paper towel tubes
    • Toiletpaper rolls
    • Wrapping paper tubes
    • Cereal boxes (pass on glossy finishes)
    • Frozen pizza circles
    • Postal deliveries

Never throw cardboard out again! Upcycle it!

  1. Moisten cardboard.
  2. Tear into small pieces.
  3. Layer loosely onto worm bedding.
  4. Enjoy it as vermicompost!

Layers of torn up cardboard provide air pockets and tunnels for worm travel. In only days an active bin begins to transform those bulky paper towel tubes into fine vermicompost.

Well done!
